Privacy

Your data is yours. We’d like to keep it that way.

What happens to your data when you visit this website. The short version fits on a postcard. The long version exists because the law likes paragraphs.

The short version

Our approach, in general

Privacy is part of good UX. Not a checkbox next to it.

We think software should feel calm. That’s hard to pull off while it’s quietly reporting your every tap to a dozen companies in the background. Cookie banners and “we value your privacy” pop-ups are a bad experience on their own, before you even get to the data part.

Some things can’t work without any data, and we won’t pretend otherwise. But “some” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Here’s what we stick to in everything we build:

  1. 01

    Only what the feature needs

If a feature can work without your data, it does. If it can’t, it gets the minimum and nothing “just in case”.

  2. 02

    Private by default

What you create stays yours. Sharing is something you choose, never something you have to switch off.

  3. 03

No ads, no trackers, no selling

Our business is building good software, not knowing what you had for breakfast.

  4. 04

    Said plainly

If we collect something, we tell you what and why, in words a human would use.

What that means in practice.

Skauz

Needs a little. Exactly that little.

A wildlife map without locations is just a list of animals. So Skauz does need some data, and only this:

  • An account, so your sightings have an owner: your email, a nickname and a profile picture from your login.
  • The sightings you log, including where you saw them.
  • Your location, only if your browser asks and you say yes, to show what’s around you.

Sightings are private until you decide to share them. No ads, no trackers, and nobody else gets to know where the rare owl lives.

Skauz is still in early development and will get its own detailed privacy policy.

Rhymate

Needs almost nothing. Your lyrics stay yours.

No account, no analytics, no ads. Your songs live on your devices and in your own iCloud. When you look up a rhyme or a definition, only that single word is sent to the dictionary services. Never your lyrics. Your half-finished breakup song is safe.

Visiting this website

This website is hosted by Netlify, Inc. (San Francisco, USA). Like any web server, theirs needs some technical information to deliver a page to you. When you visit, the following is processed automatically and may be stored in server log files for a short time:

  • your IP address
  • date and time of the request
  • the page requested and the referring page
  • browser type, version and operating system

This data is used solely to deliver the website and keep it secure and stable. It is not combined with other data and not used to build profiles. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, our legitimate interest in running a working, secure website. Netlify may process this data in the USA. More information is in Netlify's privacy policy.

Cookies, analytics & fonts

This website does not use cookies, analytics, tracking pixels, social media plugins or advertising. There is nothing to consent to, which is why you didn't have to dismiss a banner to read this.

All fonts are hosted on our own server. Your browser doesn't contact Google Fonts or any other third-party service when it loads this site.

04

Contacting us

If you send us an email, we use your address and whatever you write to answer you and, if needed, follow up. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR if your message is about a project or contract, otherwise Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, our legitimate interest in replying to you.

We delete the conversation once it's done, unless legal retention periods (for example for invoices) require us to keep it longer.

05

Your rights

Under the GDPR, you have the right to:

  • access the personal data we hold about you (Art. 15)
  • have it corrected (Art. 16) or deleted (Art. 17)
  • restrict its processing (Art. 18)
  • receive it in a portable format (Art. 20)
  • object to processing based on legitimate interest (Art. 21)

To use any of these, email info@digitowly.com. Given how little we store, it'll be a short email.

You can also lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority. For us, that is the Landesbeauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit Nordrhein-Westfalen (ldi.nrw.de).
